SCLC 2023-24 Scholarship Award Opportunity

The Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference is an organization made up of individuals and businesses of the logging, timber, trucking, construction, energy, insurance, and banking industries. The Logging Conference supports educational programs such as The Forestry Institute for Teachers, the California Forestry Challenge, Shasta College Natural Resources and Heavy Equipment Logging Operations (HELO), High School FFA and College Logging Sports Programs, as well as Southern California Edison Education Days.

The Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference hosts an annual Education Day, College Logging Sports Exhibition, Wild Things Wildlife Show, and High School FFA Forestry Competition at the Shasta District Fairgrounds for local students in February and The Cascade In-Woods Harvest Demonstration, and Sierra WoodEd Pathways events in May, as well as a variety of Logger’s Jamboree events. Funding for these programs and events, which includes scholarships, are raised during our Annual Conference Lumberjack Banquet and Education Auction.

This year marks the 9th year in which the Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference will be providing scholarship opportunities for graduating high school students who plan to continue their academic studies at the college level. Last year we awarded more than sixty (60) Scholarship Awards to High School and continuing college students.

Scholarship Language:
Several scholarships ranging in amounts from $500 to $3000 may be awarded to graduating high school seniors attending school within the Sierra-Cascade Region, who plan to continue their post-secondary education at a Community College, State College or University, or Trade School in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Forestry, Industrial Technology (welding, diesel mechanics…) or a related field. Preference will be given to students who have been active members of FFA or 4H – as well as participants in the Forestry Challenge Program. To be eligible for scholarships applicants must have demonstrated an excellent work ethic, commitment and leadership qualities while maintaining a 2.0 GPA or higher.

We utilize the community scholarship application form / process unique to each high school.  The high school provides a single application form that allows students to apply for a number of scholarship offerings in their local community.  High school counselors then collect the applications and provide the SCLC Scholarship Review Committee with copies of those meeting our requirements and preferences. As a merit-based award, we prefer scholarship essays to be focused on a positive future and would ask students to respond to the question:
“Where do you see yourself in your education and career in 5-years”.

Recipients of Scholarship Awards are presented an individual certificate during each high school awards ceremony by a Conference Director.  Each recipient is then required to provide proof of enrollment via a student identification number, and class schedule showing full-time (12-units or more) status. Monies are then distributed to the appropriate college financial aid office, by written check, to be placed in the students’ account to assist with tuition, books and college related expenses.
